PLEX-STD - Multizone serial controller for ESA electronic burner controls

PLEX-STD is a zone controller which, using the ECS communication bus, is able control the ignition and shutdown of burners as well as signalling their status on the control device. PLEX-STD is available in different versions according to the number of zones or the requirements of the system and, by means of a dip-switch bank, its operation can be easily configured by selecting the most appropriate for the application

Description

The ESA PLEX‑STD is a multizone serial controller designed to manage industrial gas burners equipped with  ALBEN and  ESTRO flame controls via the ECS serial bus. Its main function is to convert digital 24 VDC commands into serial communication signals, enabling centralized on/off control of burners across multiple furnace zones and providing feedback signals on burner status (ON or lockout). The system is available in several configurations—8S/7T/4D, 16S/15T/8D, and 24S/23T/12D—each corresponding to different numbers of zones, inputs, and outputs. Expansion modules (EXP‑PLEX1, EXP‑PLEX2) allow scalable installation.

Three operating modes can be selected using DIP‑switches:

  • S (Single output per zone): one output indicates the collective status of burners in that zone (ON or lockout).
  • T (Two cumulative outputs): one output indicates “at least one burner ON” and another “at least one burner in lockout.”
  • D (Double output per zone): two distinct outputs per zone represent “burners ON” and “burners in lockout.”

Inputs correspond to zone commands (A–Z). In each zone, burners configured with the same address segment respond to the zone command, while the node value is not relevant. The system supports quick shutdown commands, manual unblock commands (depending on mode), and “Main ON/OFF” logic in D‑type configurations.

The device continuously monitors ECS communication, detecting anomalies such as polarity reversal or short circuits. In case of communication errors, it automatically switches off all burners and activates diagnostic outputs. LED indicators provide real‑time feedback on digital inputs, outputs, communication status, and power supply.

Installation requires DIN‑rail mounting, proper grounding, separation of power and communication wiring, and use of ECS‑certified cables. The allowed ECS bus length is up to 200 meters, with a maximum of 70 connected devices. Maintenance includes periodic checks of enclosure integrity, cable condition, and terminal tightening. Faulty units are replaced rather than repaired.

Overall, ESA PLEX‑STD provides reliable, modular, and scalable burner zone management for multi‑burner industrial furnaces.
